According to a report by the Nigerian Tribune on Thursday, May 28, 2026, Senator David Mark, the National Chairman of the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC), has disclosed that he came under pressure to endorse a preferred candidate ahead of the party’s presidential primary election.
Speaking on Wednesday night during the official presentation of the party’s flag to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as its presidential candidate, Mark made it clear that he resisted such pressure in order to uphold democratic principles within the party.
He emphasised that the ADC operates on a transparent and inclusive system, not one where decisions are imposed by a single individual or a small group of influential figures behind closed doors.
According to him, the party remains committed to allowing its members to freely decide who emerges as its presidential flag bearer through a credible voting process.
The former Senate President also praised the calibre of aspirants who contested for the party’s ticket.
He specifically commended Atiku Abubakar, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and renowned economist and banker Mohammed Hayatu-Deen for participating in the race.Mark noted that the presence of these three prominent figures underscored the party’s strength and internal democracy.
Highlighting this achievement, he stated that the ADC stood out as the only political party with three formidable contenders vying for its presidential ticket.
He stressed that this level of competition reflects the party’s dedication to democratic ideals, adding that “This alone makes the ADC unique in its deep commitment to democracy, and democratic practices.”
Mark concluded by reiterating the party’s resolve to maintain fairness, openness, and credibility in all its processes, positioning the ADC as a model for democratic conduct in Nigeria’s political landscape.
