According to a report by Kyiv Post on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, Russian authorities said Moscow and the surrounding region were targeted in a large-scale drone attack early Tuesday, prompting temporary flight restrictions at several airports serving the capital.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said Russian air defenses intercepted 81 drones approaching the city during an overnight attack that lasted about 10 hours, from 8:30 p.m. Monday until 6:30 a.m. Tuesday. He claimed that more than 390 drones had been launched toward Moscow.
“Emergency service specialists are working at the sites where debris fell,” Sobyanin said, without providing details on casualties or the extent of the damage.
Moscow Region Governor Andrei Vorobyov said one drone struck a residential apartment building in the town of Chekhov, south of the capital. Authorities did not immediately report injuries.
Vorobyov also said a fire broke out at an open storage site containing tires. Open-source intelligence project Astra later reported that geolocated footage suggested the blaze occurred at the Chekhov Regeneration Plant, a major tire recycling facility that processes used vehicle tires and rubber products.
The governor added that “several dozen” drones were intercepted over Domodedovo, Podolsk, Ramenskoye and Kolomna.
A separate fire was reported at a warehouse belonging to logistics company 3PL in Koledino. According to Astra, eyewitness footage placed the fire near a major Wildberries distribution center, although the online retailer said its facility continued operating normally.
Russia’s aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, temporarily suspended arrivals and departures at Vnukovo, Domodedovo and Zhukovsky airports during the attack. Restrictions were later eased, with Domodedovo announcing that operations resumed shortly after 6 a.m. local time.
Ukrinform reported that videos circulating on Russian social media appeared to show drones flying over the Moscow region and smoke rising from several areas.
