Fresh political discussions have emerged within the ruling APC over whether President Bola Tinubu will retain Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.
Having secured firm control of the party and facing little opposition for the APC ticket unlike in 2022, attention has now shifted to Tinubu’s next major political decision — choosing his vice-presidential candidate.
In the build-up to the 2023 election, Tinubu’s decision to pair with Shettima generated controversy because both men are Muslims, sparking concerns about religious balance in the country. However, analysts say those concerns appear to have weakened as the administration continues in office.
Political observers believe Shettima’s loyalty to the president and his consistent defence of the administration’s policies have strengthened his position ahead of the 2027 race. They also argue that the vice president remains a strong political figure in Northern Nigeria, making him valuable to the APC’s electoral calculations.
Supporters of the current ticket also point to the relationship between First Lady Oluremi Tinubu and Hajia Nana Shettima, wife of the vice president, particularly through the activities of the Renewed Hope Initiative.
Despite speculations and behind-the-scenes political manoeuvres, many within the party believe dropping Shettima could create unnecessary tensions for the APC. Still, observers note that politics remains unpredictable and final decisions will rest with President Tinubu.
