A meeting of key governorship aspirants in the Peoples Democratic Party has ended with a strong resolution to adopt a consensus approach, as leaders move to avoid internal divisions ahead of the 2027 elections.
The meeting, held with Bukola Saraki in attendance, was described by participants as “cordial and extensive,” with discussions centred on party unity and electoral strategy.
Following deliberations, the aspirants agreed to place the collective interest of the party above personal ambitions, stressing that unity remains critical for victory in 2027.
“The overall interest of the party and its success in the 2027 elections are more important than our individual ambitions,” the aspirants said in a joint statement.
Signatories to the agreement include former Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Ali Ahmad; Omar Bolaji Gambari; Ladi Hassan; Olaseni Ibiwoye; and Kale Kawu.
The aspirants resolved to allow the party leadership to oversee a consensus-driven candidate selection process in line with democratic principles and electoral guidelines.
They also emphasised discipline within party ranks, warning that internal disunity could weaken the party’s chances at the polls.
In a show of commitment, the aspirants pledged to support whoever emerges as the party’s governorship candidate.
