Blessing Fubara, a relative of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, formally joined the contest for governor under the banner of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), signaling yet another dramatic change in the political scene in Rivers State, as reported by The Daily Post on Thursday, May 21, 2026.
He obtained his expression of interest and nomination papers from the party’s headquarters in Abuja.
A blessing On Wednesday, just a few hours before Governor Fubara stunned everyone by announcing his withdrawal from the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial primary election, Fubara collected the forms for the opposition party.
Although it is still unknown whether the two men are related by blood, they are both from the Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Success Jack, the Rivers State NDC Chairman, verified the news and recognized Blessing Fubara Senior as one of the top candidates vying for the party’s nomination.
Jack said that the party is making great strides toward winning the governorship and all other elected seats in Rivers State in the 2027 general election.
This action coincides with recent reports that many of Governor Fubara’s key supporters and political organizations have begun a mass defection to the NDC.
In preparation for the 2027 elections, the governor’s followers are working hard to find a viable alternative platform to take on the political establishment of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike now that he has left the APC primary.
According to political experts, the surprising appearance of yet another Fubara from the same neighborhood under the NDC banner may be a calculated move by the governor’s side to realign their troops and maintain their political importance in the state.
