Manchester United are tracking West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes this summer, though a hefty asking price could complicate any potential deal as per reports from Manchester Evening News on Tuesday May 26, 2026.
The 21-year-old Portuguese talent enjoyed a standout personal campaign at the London Stadium despite the Hammers’ disastrous Premier League season, which ended in relegation to the Championship.
United, Arsenal, and Paris Saint-Germain have all registered interest in the midfielder, who has featured consistently for West Ham since mid-March.
West Ham are believed to be demanding around £80 million for Fernandes, a figure that represents double what they paid Southampton for him just twelve months ago.
While their bargaining position has weakened following the drop to the second tier, the club appear determined to recoup a significant fee.
For United, the price tag presents a familiar dilemma. The club are also pursuing Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, who is similarly valued at around £100 million, a sum United are unlikely to commit to for a single player.
Atalanta’s Ederson is understood to be closing in on a move to Old Trafford, with further midfield reinforcements expected ahead of the 2026/27 campaign following Casemiro’s departure.
Other names in consideration include Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba, Aurelien Tchouameni, and Sandro Tonali.
Meanwhile, West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen, also linked with United, addressed supporters following relegation.
“Winning that trophy in Prague was the best night of my career. Sunday was the worst,” he wrote on Instagram, before adding that the club has the desire to bounce back and return to the Premier League swiftly.
Fernandes’ future, like much at West Ham, remains uncertain this summer.
