Ambassador Blessing Fubara Senior, who is the older sibling of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has officially announced his plan to run for the upcoming Rivers State governorship election with the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).
As reported by PUNCH on Thursday, May 28, 2026, the candidate for governor pledged to serve just one term if he wins the election. He indicated that this choice comes from his desire to bring back peace, enhance governance, and foster economic development throughout the state.
In comments made prior to the party’s primary election, Fubara presented himself as a capable and dynamic leader who is ready to tackle the obstacles that Rivers State faces. He mentioned that his goals are aimed at rebuilding public confidence and fostering a stable atmosphere for growth.
The aspiring governor also called on party supporters and citizens from all 23 local government areas in the state to engage actively in the primary election. He urged members of the Nigerian Democratic Congress to rally at their wards and polling locations to show their backing for his candidacy.
Fubara emphasized that his political initiative symbolizes a united quest for a brighter future for Rivers State, ensuring the people’s needs are kept as a primary focus.
He stated, “I urge my 2 million supporters from the 23 local government areas of Rivers State who are members of the Nigerian Democratic Congress to come together, stand at your polling stations, be present in your wards, and make a bold statement so we can reclaim the essence of our beloved Rivers State.”
His announcement has sparked conversations within the political scene of Rivers State as the preparations for the governorship election are underway. Political analysts think that his participation in the race could impact the competition, particularly within the opposing groups.
The Nigerian Democratic Congress is set to hold its primary election in the next few weeks as candidates ramp up their consultations and campaigns prior to the voting.
