Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has raised concerns over alleged attempts to interfere with the affairs of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections, following his emergence as the party’s presidential candidate.
Speaking during the ADC presidential primaries on Thursday, May 28, 2026, Atiku addressed party delegates and supporters, emphasizing the need to protect opposition parties from external influence. According to him, the ADC coalition was established after extensive consultations, negotiations, and sacrifices by political stakeholders committed to strengthening democratic opposition in Nigeria.
During his speech, Atiku warned against any form of interference in the party’s activities, stating, “Any attempt by the presidency or INEC to interfere in ADC affairs will be resisted.” The remark was made in response to concerns surrounding alleged pressure from outside political forces on the party and its leadership.
The former vice president stressed that the ADC remains committed to preserving its independence and safeguarding its internal democratic processes. He argued that opposition parties should be allowed to operate freely without intimidation, manipulation, or undue political pressure from influential individuals or institutions.
Atiku also alleged that opposition groups in the country have faced several challenges, including legal battles, political intimidation, and attempts to create divisions within their ranks. He warned that such actions could weaken democratic competition and undermine public confidence in the electoral process as the country prepares for the next general elections.
In addition, he stated that the ADC coalition is focused on addressing key national challenges, including economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and political intolerance. According to Atiku, the party aims to offer Nigerians an alternative platform founded on accountability, transparency, inclusion, and effective governance.
He further urged party members and supporters to remain united and dedicated to the coalition’s mission despite the political challenges ahead. Atiku maintained that unity among opposition leaders would be essential in mounting a strong challenge against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.
The former vice president concluded by reaffirming his commitment to defending democratic principles and rebuilding public trust in Nigeria’s institutions and governance system.
