According to a report by The Punch on Sunday, May 31, 2026, the race for the 2027 presidency took an unprecedented turn over the weekend as former President Goodluck Jonathan, Peter Obi, and Governor Seyi Makinde all secured presidential tickets across different political platforms amidst dramatic conventions.
In Abuja, a major faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Tanimu Turaki declared Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate.
The convention faced severe disruptions, forcing leaders to relocate to Garki after security operatives barricaded the original venue.
Hoodlums later attacked the delegates, but the faction successfully issued a Certificate of Return to Jonathan in absentia.
However, the mainstream PDP leadership backed by Nyesom Wike immediately distanced itself from the event, insisting Sandy Onor remains the party’s legitimate candidate.
Meanwhile, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi formally accepted his nomination as the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Coalition (NDC).
In his acceptance speech, Obi expressed deep concern over the nation’s security crisis, pointing out that Nigeria’s global terrorism impact ranking has worsened significantly.
He unveiled a roadmap targeting intelligence-driven security, expanding health insurance coverage, and boosting electricity distribution by 10,000 megawatts within four years.
Simultaneously, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde clinched the presidential ticket of the Allied People’s Movement (APM).
Launching his “Reset Nigeria Agenda,” Makinde promised a decentralized security system, commercial restructuring of the NNPC, and transparent fuel pricing templates to protect citizens from arbitrary costs.
He secured a massive boost as a northern delegation led by Bauchi State stakeholders formally endorsed his candidacy.
With these heavyweights securing structures, the 2027 political landscape has effectively fractured, setting the stage for an intense multi-party battle.
