According to Sky Sports, Ferran Torres’ second goal for Barcelona in the Champions League second-leg clash against Atletico Madrid on April 14, 2026, was disallowed for offside because the ball deflected off Atletico defender and it was not a pass according to an IFAB Rule.
The incident occurred when Gavi unleashed a shot that deflected off an Atletico defender before Torres finished past the goalkeeper.
Officials ruled the goal offside because Torres was in an offside position when Gavi first played the ball, in line with IFAB Law 11.
The law judges offside at the instant a teammate touches or plays the ball, regardless of any later deflection.
VAR upheld this decision, viewing the sequence as one continuous phase started by Gavi.
However, more critically, there was also a handball by the defender during the deflection visible in the circled frame inside the penalty area.
This foul was neglected by officials and VAR, who failed to award a penalty or allow the goal.
