According to a report by the Punch on Sunday, May 31, 2026, the military has begun efforts to secure the release of former Director of Defence Information, Major General Rabe Abubakar (retd.), and his wife following their abduction by gunmen in Katsina State.
A senior military source confirmed the incident on Saturday, stating that security operatives had already commenced actions aimed at rescuing the retired officer and his wife from their captors.
The source said, “We have received the sad news of his abduction and that of his wife, and we will act accordingly to ensure he and his wife are rescued.”
According to information shared on a military veterans’ platform, Abubakar and his wife were kidnapped while travelling to Katsina State.
The incident reportedly occurred along Matazu Local Government Area of the state.
It was gathered that the former defence spokesman was travelling with his wife when the attackers intercepted their vehicle and whisked them away to an unknown destination.
Reports also indicated that the driver of the vehicle managed to escape despite sustaining a gunshot wound during the attack.
The vehicle, a red Peugeot 406, was later recovered and parked at the Matazu Division of the Nigeria Police Force.
The development has sparked concern among military veterans and security stakeholders, given Abubakar’s previous role as a senior spokesperson for the Defence Headquarters.
Security agencies are yet to issue an official public statement on the abduction, but efforts to track down the kidnappers and rescue the victims are said to be ongoing.
