According to a report by Channels TV, on Saturday June 6, 2026, the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on female politicians across the country to intensify their efforts and change their approach toward securing elective offices, emphasizing that political success is built on grassroots connections and numbers rather than gender.
Senator Tinubu made the remarks during a strategic meeting with the All Progressives Congress (APC) women leaders from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) at the State House in Abuja.
Reflecting on her own extensive political career, which includes serving three terms in the Nigerian Senate, the First Lady stressed the absolute necessity of maintaining a direct link with constituents and carrying local structures along.
“You have to connect with them,” Senator Tinubu urged the gathering, pointing out that true political leadership requires consistent engagement at the local level.
“Up to today you asked me what happened to people in my district. Even my woman leader is now a vice chairman of the local government in Apapa. You know I carried them along. Even the female chairman we had in the day. I will call them. I said if I find it difficult to reach out to you, how do you want your constituents con constituents to reach out to you?”
The First Lady challenged the notion that advocacy alone can secure women a seat at the table. She highlighted that political reality in Nigeria requires understanding structural dynamics and working within them to earn respect.
