According to a report by Daily Post on Monday June 1, 2026, Controversial Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has explained why he and many other celebrities are reluctant to publicly criticize the country’s insecurity and economic challenges.
Reacting to comments by British-Nigerian rapper Skepta, who urged Nigerian celebrities to speak up against the worsening situation in the country, Portable said many entertainers fear possible consequences from the authorities if they become outspoken.
According to the singer, Nigerians living abroad are in a better position to raise such concerns because they are outside the reach of the government. He argued that celebrities residing in Nigeria risk facing harassment, persecution, or other forms of punishment for expressing their views.
Portable claimed that some individuals are still dealing with the fallout from previous statements they made, adding that many public figures are frustrated by the country’s current situation but choose to remain silent out of fear.
He also suggested that outspoken celebrities could face restrictions, including difficulties with travel documents, if they openly criticize those in power. As a result, he said his main focus is on improving his personal life and career rather than engaging in public criticism.
Despite his stance, Portable stressed that celebrities do care about Nigeria’s problems, but many feel it is safer to remain quiet while living in the country. He maintained that speaking out would be less risky if they were based abroad.
