According to a report by Vanguard, on Tuesday June 23, 2026, Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, has dismissed the call by former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for President Bola Tinubu to resign from office.
Onanuga stated that Obi’s comments were not a genuine attempt to hold the President accountable but a political move aimed at drawing attention, he described the remarks as unnecessary and coming shortly after the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, recorded victories in recent elections.
According to the Presidency, Obi’s comparison between Nigeria and the United Kingdom was misplaced because the two countries operate different systems of government, the statement noted that while Britain has a parliamentary system where a prime minister can step down under political pressure, Nigeria runs a presidential system in which a president is elected for a fixed four-year term.
The Presidency pointed to the APC’s recent electoral successes in Ekiti State and senatorial contests in Nasarawa, Enugu, Ondo and Rivers states, it said the election results demonstrated continued public support for President Tinubu and his administration.
Onanuga argued that the outcome of the polls should be of greater concern to Obi and his political movement ahead of the 2027 general election, he added that Nigerians would have the opportunity to assess the President’s performance during the next presidential election rather than through demands for resignation.
Defending the administration’s record, the Presidency said Tinubu inherited serious economic and security challenges when he assumed office in 2023, it maintained that the government has made measurable progress in addressing those issues.
”It is laughable that Obi, who, as governor, was a colossal failure, unable to secure lives and property in his small state of Anambra, as documented by his successor, Willie Obiano, is now the one calling for President Tinubu’s resignation over security breaches in some parts of the country,” he said.
