According to a report by Daily Post on Sunday, June 28, 2026, human greed, negligence, and the over exploitation of natural resources are the root causes of the climate crisis, according to former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo.
He went on to say that these actions have caused extensive environmental damage in many different places by upsetting the natural biological equilibrium that nature had set.
During his discussion of sustainability and environmental degradation, he made these comments, emphasising that human actions are mostly to blame for the planet’s deteriorating state.
During his speech in Kano, the former president discussed the Environment and Sustainability Initiative and the Trust Fund.
He claims that the initiative’s founders set it up to bolster environmental protection and ecological preservation initiatives.
In recognition of his leadership and public service achievements, he further mentioned that the Trust Fund was named after Abubakar Mahmoud, the former President of the Nigerian Bar Association.
In his remarks to the ceremony’s attendees, Obasanjo emphasised that destructive human actions are the primary causes of climate change.
Responsible use of natural resources and environmental protection should be top priorities for everyone, he said, calling on governments, organisations, and individuals to step up their efforts.
He brought attention to the necessity for more concerted conservation efforts and stressed that unsustainable behaviours are making environmental deterioration worse.
He went on to say that he thinks the universe was initially formed in a stable and balanced condition, where all the natural systems were in perfect harmony.
The progressive destruction of this balance, however, has been brought about by human acts motivated by self-interest, according to him.
He claims that the environment and human livelihoods have suffered as a result of unregulated extraction of natural resources.
Obasanjo revealed that he has personally planted over 3.5 million trees as part of his efforts to promote environmental sustainability.
To combat climate change and restore damaged ecosystems, he said, this project is a part of his effort.
In these endeavours, he brought attention to the fact that planting trees is still one of the concrete things people can do to lessen the impact on the environment and aid in its recovery.
In addition, he emphasised that protecting the environment is everyone’s duty, not just that of any one country or organization.
Every entity, including governments, organisations, and individuals, must do their part to protect the environment, in his view.
Addressing the issues of climate change and environmental degradation requires concerted effort from every segment of society, he emphasised.
He said: “God created the world in harmony, but through our greed, carelessness and reckless exploitation of nature, we have done more harm than good.
