In a recent interview on Symfoni TV, on Sunday, June 21, 2026, Afam Ogene, member of the House of Representatives representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency of Anambra State, addressed comments made about former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and the security situation that existed in the state before and during his administration.
Ogene said historical political discussions should be based on verifiable facts rather than inaccurate recollections. He argued that public figures have a responsibility to ensure that their statements about past events are supported by the historical record.
Speaking during the interview, Ogene stated, “Oshiomhole said, ‘It was under Obi that the Bakassi Boys were running riots in Anambra State’” He made the remark while responding to comments attributed to former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole regarding security developments in Anambra State.
According to Ogene, the activities of the Bakassi Boys predated Peter Obi’s administration and should not be incorrectly linked to his tenure as governor. He maintained that a proper understanding of political history is necessary for fair and informed public debate.
The lawmaker further argued that political discourse should focus on factual assessments of governance records rather than claims that can be disputed by documented events. He noted that voters benefit when discussions are grounded in evidence and historical accuracy.
Ogene also emphasized the importance of evaluating leaders based on their policies, achievements, and responses to challenges while in office. He said objective analysis strengthens democratic accountability and promotes better decision-making among citizens.
He concluded by urging political actors to engage in issue-based debates, stressing that Nigeria’s democracy is strengthened when public conversations are guided by facts rather than misinformation.
