In a recent interview on Symfoni TV, on Sunday, June 21, 2026, Afam Ogene, member of the House of Representatives representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency of Anambra State, expressed concerns about the relationship between political office holders and the judiciary, stressing the importance of maintaining institutional independence.
Ogene argued that democratic governance works best when each arm of government operates within clearly defined constitutional boundaries. He noted that public confidence in the justice system depends largely on the perception that judicial institutions are free from political influence.
Speaking during the interview, Ogene stated, “On live television, we saw Minister Wike inaugurating about 10 or 11 houses for judge.” He made the remark while discussing what he described as growing concerns about the interaction between politically exposed persons and members of the judiciary.
According to him, government institutions already possess administrative structures and budgetary provisions that enable them to carry out their responsibilities independently. He maintained that the judiciary should continue to strengthen mechanisms that preserve both its autonomy and public credibility.
Ogene further argued that citizens expect judges to remain above political controversies, given the critical role they play in interpreting laws and resolving disputes. He said preserving the integrity of the judicial system is essential for democratic stability.
The federal lawmaker also emphasized that transparency and accountability should remain guiding principles across all arms of government. He noted that Nigerians deserve institutions that inspire confidence and command public trust.
He concluded by calling for greater adherence to constitutional principles, stressing that strong democratic institutions are necessary for the country’s long-term development and political stability.
