According to a report by Anadolu Agency on Sunday, May 31, 2026, Iran has announced that its military forces shot down a United States military drone after it allegedly entered the country’s airspace over territorial waters, marking a fresh escalation in tensions between Tehran and Washington.
According to Iran’s state-run news agency, IRNA, the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday when Iranian air defense systems detected what officials described as a hostile aerial intrusion.
In a statement carried by the agency, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said the unmanned aircraft was identified as an MQ-1 Predator drone belonging to the US military. Iranian authorities alleged that the drone had entered the country’s airspace over its territorial waters and was conducting what they described as a hostile mission.
The IRGC stated that its air defense units tracked the aircraft shortly after it crossed into Iranian-controlled territory before engaging and destroying it using advanced missile defense systems.
“An aggressive MQ-1 drone belonging to the US military, which entered Iranian airspace over territorial waters with the aim of carrying out a hostile operation, was identified and destroyed by the IRGC’s modern air defense missiles at dawn today,” the statement said.
Iranian officials did not immediately provide details regarding the exact location of the incident, the extent of any wreckage recovered, or whether the drone had been conducting surveillance operations at the time it was shot down.
The United States had not publicly commented on the claim at the time of reporting, and there was no immediate confirmation from US defense authorities regarding the alleged loss of a military drone.
The incident comes amid continued geopolitical tensions between Iran and the United States, particularly in strategically important waterways and airspaces in the Middle East. Encounters involving military aircraft, naval vessels, and surveillance drones have periodically raised concerns about the risk of direct confrontation between the two countries.
In its statement, the IRGC warned that Iran would not tolerate what it described as violations of its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The military organization reiterated that any future acts it considers aggression would be met with a firm response.
Iranian officials have consistently maintained that the country’s armed forces remain on high alert and are prepared to respond to any perceived threats against national security.
