According to a report by Daily Post on Saturday, May 2, 2026, Alhaji Buba Galadima, an elder statesman and former chieftain of the New Nigerian Party, NNPP, has stated that the African Democratic Congress, ADC, will not be able to present candidates for the 2027 general elections.
He made this assertion while speaking on the current political developments in the country, stressing that the party is facing serious legal and political challenges that could prevent it from fielding aspirants in the next election cycle.
He further explained that there is an ongoing plan to frustrate the party through legal actions, particularly litigation processes, in order to stop it from producing candidates.
According to him, this development is not new, as he had earlier raised concerns and issued warnings more than a year ago about attempts to weaken opposition structures through court-related strategies.
Speaking during the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement summit held in Abuja on Saturday, the former chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, noted that prominent political figures such as Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso are already making arrangements toward an alternative political direction.
He indicated that these discussions are part of broader efforts among political actors associated with the ADC platform to reposition themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
He also linked recent judicial pronouncements to a broader political strategy, describing a Supreme Court judgement delivered earlier in the week as part of a calculated arrangement affecting aspirants within the ADC.
He stated that the decision could significantly impact individuals intending to contest against President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming general elections.
According to him, the political environment is being shaped in a way that limits competition, adding that there are indications of a move to weaken opposition parties.
He maintained that the intention is to create a situation where the current president faces minimal resistance during the electoral process, a scenario he described as already unfolding based on recent developments.
He also referenced the timing of judicial decisions delivered within the week, noting that rulings issued on Wednesday and Thursday appear, in his view, to align with efforts that could affect the political ambitions of ADC aspirants.
He said these developments reinforce his earlier position regarding the challenges facing opposition platforms as they prepare for the 2027 elections.
“I said this since one and a half years ago in the press that Tinubu will try to stifle the political parties, that Tinubu wants to run as a sole candidate in Nigeria, and today, it is happening. The judgements that were delivered on Wednesday and Thursday, to any clever man, was a trap set for ADC to which most of us here belong,” he said.
