According to a report by Vanguard, Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has broken his silence regarding his recent move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), characterizing his history of political floor-crossing not as instability, but as a rigid adherence to ethical standards.
Speaking on a television program on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, Obi issued a stark warning to his new political home, suggesting that his residency within the ADC is contingent upon the party maintaining a transparent internal process.
Obi, who officially joined the ADC in late 2025 following a high-profile exit from the Labour Party, explained that his decisions are consistently steered by a commitment to fairness.
He argued that remaining in a political environment where processes are manipulated or undemocratic would be a betrayal of his core principles.
“In PDP, I said it before, people were not playing by the rules, it was transactional,” Obi stated. “I cannot be part of transactional primary, I cannot be paying people to serve them, so I moved to Labour.”
The former governor emphasized that while he is currently a member of the ADC, he will not hesitate to take a stand if the party’s internal systems mirror the questionable practices he witnessed in his previous affiliations.
He suggested that for democratic governance to be sustainable, political parties must be built on a foundation of accountability and trust especially as Nigeria begins to look toward the 2027 electoral cycle.
