As we gear up for next year’s elections, we’ve seen major realignments in the polity, from defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the emergence of a new major opposition in the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
During an Arise News interview, former Benue Governor Gabriel Suswam said the constitution forbids him from running for governor again, so he’ll be running for the Senate instead.
He said the move to APC was about aligning with the centre in the interest of the people of Benue State and working with Governor Hyacinth Alia, whom he described as a very good friend from long ago.
He stated, “What is the need for me? I’m a politician, and as a politician, if you’re still strong enough to contest an election, you always want to contest an election. If I’m not strong enough, I would aspire to something else. Definitely, there is something I would look for in supporting him, so it is not unusual that I would desire to contest an election.
According to him, the only election that I can contest now is a Senate election. Having been in the House of Reps, of course I can’t go back. I can’t run for governor even if I wanted to; the governor is doing very well, and I’m supporting him. I have no reason to want to run for that, and the constitution forbids me from running for governor again. So of course, I’ll be running for the senate of my soul.”
