Widow, Ifeoma Asonye has revealed why she took the unusual step of marrying another woman after the death of her husband, saying she did so in an attempt to preserve her late husband’s family lineage and protect her property from being seized because she had only female children.

Asonye disclosed this during an interview on News Central TV, on Tuesday, 23 June, 2026, while recounting the hardships widows in Nigeria’s South-East face after losing their husbands. She explained that pressure from her late husband’s relatives and fears of losing everything she had built pushed her into making a decision she never imagined she would take.
Explaining her reason, Asonye said, “If you just go and adopt, they will say they don’t know where you brought him from. That’s why I married her. Paid her bride price, I killed a goat. At the end, the girl now said a woman cannot marry a fellow woman and ran away.”
According to Asonye, her late husband’s brother had earlier threatened to dispossess her of her property because she had no son, insisting that her daughters could not inherit the family’s assets. Faced with the possibility of losing everything, she said she explored alternatives that would enable her to have a male heir who would be accepted by the family and community.
She explained that adoption was not considered an option because an adopted child would not have been recognised as a legitimate member of the family. As a result, she said she paid the bride price for a woman and performed the traditional marriage rites in the hope that the arrangement would eventually produce a male child to continue her late husband’s lineage.
