According to a report by Sky Sports on Tuesday, June 8, 2026, England have been ranked among the leading contenders to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Opta’s supercomputer giving the Three Lions a 10.9 per cent chance of lifting the trophy.
In recent Opta’s tournament simulations, European champions Spain are the favourites with around fifteen per cent chance of success, while France are second on thirteen per cent. England occupy third place ahead of defending champions Argentina, as well as Portugal, Brazil and Germany.
The projections suggest England will top Group L before facing Senegal in the Round of 32 and Mexico in the Round of 16. However, their path could become significantly tougher thereafter, with potential knockout clashes against Brazil, Argentina and Spain.
Despite having one of the most valuable squads at the tournament, England may face additional challenges due to extensive travel during the group stage. The Three Lions are expected to cover nearly 9,000 kilometres between matches, considerably more than France and Spain.
England’s squad also benefits from strong depth, with most players competing in the Premier League, which Opta rates as the strongest domestic league in the world. The team boasts several high-profile stars, including Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham.
While England possess the quality to challenge for the title, analysts believe their difficult route, travel demands and tournament conditions could make their quest for a first World Cup triumph since 1966 a formidable task.
