Ini Ememobong, the factional Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has reacted to comments credited to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, regarding the party’s readiness for the 2027 general elections amid growing internal tensions within the opposition party.
Speaking during an interview on Arise TV on Friday, May 29, 2026, Ememobong addressed concerns over the PDP’s internal crisis and dismissed claims suggesting that the party lacks the capacity to field a credible presidential candidate in the next election cycle.
According to him, statements questioning the strength and future of the PDP are part of recurring political narratives often witnessed ahead of major elections. He maintained that despite ongoing disagreements among party leaders, the PDP remains a strong political force with structures spread across the country.
During the interview, Ememobong quoted Wike as saying, “The PDP does not have the capacity to present a candidate in the 2027 election.” He argued that such remarks should not be interpreted as the end of the party, stressing that political parties frequently experience internal disputes without losing their relevance.
He further noted that history has shown that parties can overcome crises and still emerge competitive during elections. Ememobong warned that public comments capable of deepening divisions within the party could weaken the confidence of members and supporters.
The PDP spokesman called on party stakeholders to focus on reconciliation, unity, and grassroots mobilization ahead of the 2027 elections. He insisted that electoral success would ultimately depend on effective organization, strong voter engagement, and the ability of the party to maintain its nationwide structure rather than political statements or media narratives.
