Political analyst Maoboye Nangi has criticised Siminalayi Fubara over reports that the Rivers governor has stepped down from the 2027 governorship race following a peace agreement linked to his political dispute with Nyesom Wike.
Speaking during an interview on News Central TV, Nangi said many people who once supported Fubara are now disappointed with him. According to him, several supporters, especially from the Ijaw community, defended the governor during the political crisis in Rivers State but later felt betrayed by his actions.
Nangi, who identified himself as the Secretary-General of the Ijaw Youth Council, said Fubara was not stepping aside because he feared defeat. He claimed the governor had reached a political agreement after meeting strong opposition.
He stated that Fubara agreed with the president to support the candidate who would emerge for the next governorship election after the reported peace deal. Reports indicate that all other aspirants later stepped down, leaving Kingsley Chinda as the sole candidate of the All Progressives Congress.
Nangi also warned political stakeholders to be cautious, alleging that the governor has a history of not keeping agreements. He added that many Rivers residents now want political stability after months of tension in the state.
In his words, “He agreed with the president that he’s going to work for the candidate who would come up, but he’s going to scuttle that plan. And they should watch him, because he’s good at not keeping to agreements.”
