Recent developments surrounding the NDC primaries have continued to generate reactions, following allegations raised by Kenneth Okonkwo regarding the conduct of the process. The claims suggested that aspirants were required to pay additional sums of ₦10 million for the House of Representatives and ₦20 million for the Senate after already purchasing their expression of interest forms.
However, Obunike Ohaegbu has come forward to clarify his position on the matter during an appearance on Channels Television. In his remarks, Ohaegbu addressed the allegations directly, explaining the context behind the message that has now sparked widespread debate.
According to him, the communication in question was not intended to support any form of financial demand but rather to correct misinformation circulating among party members. He insisted that his message was widely distributed and transparent.
In his words, Ohaegbu stated, “I have my phone here. You can see the broadcast list. I sent everything to 2,000 people, including Kenneth Okonkwo and Peter Obi. The message that triggered this was a broadcast I sent, which I can also show you. His Excellency, Peter Obi, the party’s candidate, received it. You can see it—I sent it to him. What I said was that I addressed the NDC members, telling them not to regard any rumours suggesting that any sitting member has been given an automatic ticket.”
His clarification has added a new dimension to the ongoing conversation, as political observers attempt to understand the differences between the allegations and the explanation provided. While some see the issue as a case of miscommunication, others believe it highlights the need for greater transparency within party processes.
The situation has also drawn attention to how internal party messages can sometimes be interpreted differently once they enter the public space. For many, the key concern remains ensuring fairness and credibility in the conduct of primaries.
As reactions continue to trail the issue, stakeholders within the party are expected to provide further clarity to address concerns and maintain confidence among members and supporters.
