According to reports by Daily Post, the convention proceeded despite the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to monitor the party’s congresses and convention, citing a court ruling. The party had earlier conducted its state congresses before holding the national gathering.
Party members and stakeholders were present at the venue, where the constitutional amendments were eventually adopted through a vote.
During its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, the party also dissolved the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Ralph Nwosu with immediate effect. A new leadership team headed by David Mark subsequently assumed control of the party’s affairs, a decision later ratified at the convention.
In his remarks, Mark, who now serves as the party’s National Chairman, described the convention as a strong outing and suggested that it marked the beginning of the ADC’s push toward winning the presidency in 2027.
Reacting to the development, public affairs analyst Nduka Odo said the convention reflected a renewed determination by the party to position itself as a credible opposition force. Odo, a communications expert at Peaceland University in Enugu, noted in an interview with Daily Post that the party’s decision to proceed despite various challenges indicated growing political boldness.
He observed that the move, including overcoming last-minute venue uncertainties, signaled a shift from what he described as the party’s previously passive approach. According to him, if the ADC intends to achieve significant political success, it must remain firm in confronting the ruling government and institutions such as INEC.
Odo further suggested that the party’s willingness to push through obstacles demonstrated a new level of assertiveness. He added that challenging the ruling party’s strategies would be necessary if the ADC hoped to unseat it, noting that Bola Tinubu had shown considerable political skill in securing his position ahead of future elections.
Further talking, he said, “I’ve said before that Tinubu’s poor performances in governance have given the opposition enough campaign materials to use against him. Insecurity, poor electricity supply, collapse of the national grid, cost of living, awards of huge projects without due process, and so many more.
“However, it appears ADC doesn’t understand all that. Look at the recently revealed digital footprints of INEC Chairman? Yet, ADC leadership ignores it!
“The only way ADC will make headway is by daring and challenging all state organs that the ruling party will use.”
