In a recent interview with The Sun on Sunday, April 12, 2026, former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has warned that Nigeria’s democracy is under threat if opposition parties are weakened.
George expressed concern that allies of President Bola Tinubu are allegedly working to sideline other political groups, he said such actions could create a system where only one party dominates the country’s political space.
According to him, Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity and noted that the country is made up of many ethnic groups, languages, cultures, and beliefs, he argued that no single individual or political party can fully represent all these differences.
George stressed that Nigeria was not built to be governed by one party alone, he said the country has, since its formation in 1914, been on a long journey to build unity despite its differences and warned that abandoning a multi-party system could reverse that progress.
He added that democracy thrives when there are competing ideas and strong opposition, without this balance, he said, governance could become one-sided and unaccountable and cautioned that suppressing political competition may weaken institutions and reduce public trust.
George further stated that moving toward a one-party structure could have serious consequences for national stability, he warned that such a shift might deepen divisions rather than promote unity.
”In the meantime, Tinubu people are busy dismantling the other political competitors so that you can become the sole candidate. Do you think Nigeria was built for one individual?” he said.
