Reacting to allegations that Peter Obi may sue Kenneth Okonkwo for allegedly defamatory utterances, former senator Shehu Sani stated that seeking redress in court is not improper.
Sani made the point in a Facebook post that anyone who feels their reputation has been tarnished can go to court about it. The court, in his view, will always be an accessible venue for anyone seeking redress, safeguarding their rights, and a final say in legal matters.
The ex-lawmaker emphasised that anyone, whether they are famous or not, has the legal right to sue for libel or defamation if they feel their reputation has been damaged. Furthermore, he has first-hand experience with these types of situations, having served as both a defendant and a complainant.
Also, Sani warned people on social media not to use derogatory words or make accusations without proof. Anyone who makes public claims, he emphasised, should be ready to defend themselves and pay for legal representation themselves if they are challenged in court.
Additionally, he cautioned people against being swayed by social media fame and said that online supporters won’t likely offer financial or legal support in the event of lawsuits.
Sani ended by saying that private individuals are typically more inclined to seek legal action to defend their reputation, in contrast to public officials who may opt to disregard defamatory remarks.
Peter is allegedly taking Keneth to court for libel, he said. That is perfectly OK. That is something that every citizen is entitled to do.
