According to Anadolu Agency, Spain’s government has strongly condemned an assault on a Catholic nun in Jerusalem, urging Israeli authorities to ensure religious freedom and uphold the city’s delicate status quo.
The attack occurred earlier this week when an Israeli man allegedly struck the nun near the Via Dolorosa, a holy site in Jerusalem’s Old City. Local reports indicate the suspect has since been arrested. The nun, whose identity has not been released, sustained minor injuries.
In an official statement, Spain’s Foreign Ministry expressed alarm over rising violence against Christian clergy in the Holy Land and called for immediate protective measures.
“Israel must guarantee freedom of worship, respect the status quo in Jerusalem, the ministry said, reiterating that any disruption to the longstanding arrangements governing holy sites risks inflaming interfaith tensions.
Jerusalem’s status quo, upheld since Ottoman times, regulates access and worship rights for Jews, Christians, and Muslims at sensitive locations. Spain, which maintains strong diplomatic ties with both Israel and the Palestinian Authority, urged a full investigation and accountability for the attacker.
The Spanish embassy in Tel Aviv is monitoring the case, no further comment has been issued by Israeli officials at this time.
