A House of Representatives aspirant under the NDC in Anambra State, Ohaegbu Obunike, has alleged that he deliberately held back from responding to political violence in Nnewi South on election day, fearing that any retaliation could have cost lives.
Speaking on Channels TV, Obunike said, “On election day, there was no voting in Nnewi South. They had a crisis and they shut down. I was very conscious of that. Because of that, I never lifted a finger in Nnewi South because if I did, someone could have been dead. Because my people had mobilised there to support me. At the end of the election, I got 720 votes in Nnewi South. Thousands came out. They told us there were only 700 something,” he said.
Obunike further argued that the results from his own ward alone confirm he won the primary on the ground, noting that the majority of registered voters from Nnewi South in his district voted for him.
He claimed to have had 1,320 votes against his closest rival’s 900 plus votes. However, he explains his frustration that the party has refused to announce the result after the primaries.
