The 27-year-old defender earned Poland a share of the spoils with a spectacular long-range strike late in the match that beat Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye. His goal arrived just moments after Nigeria had taken a 2-1 lead through a Paul Onuachu penalty, preventing the hosts from ending the game in defeat.
Despite the importance of the goal, Wiśniewski’s muted reaction attracted attention from supporters and journalists. Explaining his response after the match, the defender said the goal caught him by surprise and that exhaustion played a major role in limiting his celebration.
“I didn’t have a celebration prepared because I rarely score goals,” Wiśniewski said. “I just hit the ball instinctively and it found the net.”
He added that the demanding nature of the contest had left him physically drained by the closing stages.
“By the 90th minute I was tired, so I didn’t feel like running around. I simply raised my hands. I’m happy to have scored my first goal in this way,” he said.
The strike carried extra significance as it was Wiśniewski’s first goal for Poland since making his senior international debut against the Netherlands in a FIFA World Cup qualifier in September 2025.
Looking back on the moment, the defender joked that supporters should not expect a repeat anytime soon, admitting that such efforts are not a regular part of his training routine.
“I’m not sure I’ll be able to do that again soon. I don’t score goals like that in training,” he said with a laugh.
While Poland celebrated salvaging a draw at the death, Nigeria can take positives from another encouraging performance ahead of their upcoming friendly against Portugal.
The Super Eagles created several attacking opportunities and appeared on course for victory before Wiśniewski’s stunning late effort denied them a win.
