According to a report by Football.London on Thursday, May 28, 2026, Barcelona are increasing efforts to sign Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez, with sporting director Deco already holding discussions with the player’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, over a possible summer transfer.
The talks reportedly also involved former Atlético Madrid player and agent Juanma López, with conversations focusing on how Barcelona could structure an offer capable of convincing Atlético to sell the Argentine forward.
López’s long-standing relationship with Atlético Madrid is believed to potentially play an important role in helping negotiations progress smoothly between the two clubs.
Reports from Spain suggest Barcelona are preparing an official bid that could be worth around £87 million.
Álvarez only joined Atlético Madrid from Manchester City in 2024 in a deal valued at approximately £81 million, meaning a transfer this summer would represent a quick turnaround in his career.
Despite enjoying a strong season in which he scored 20 goals and provided nine assists in 49 appearances, the 26-year-old is reportedly interested in joining Barcelona if the opportunity becomes realistic.
Barcelona sporting director Deco is said to be keen on completing the deal before the upcoming FIFA World Cup in North America.
The club are also expected to finalise the signing of Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon in the near future as part of their ongoing squad rebuild.
Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone briefly addressed the speculation surrounding Álvarez, suggesting that the final decision would ultimately depend on the player himself.
Meanwhile, Arsenal’s hopes of signing the Argentine forward appear to be fading as Barcelona accelerate negotiations.
The Premier League champions have been monitoring Álvarez as part of their plans to strengthen the squad after winning the league title, while Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers has also reportedly emerged as a player of interest for Mikel Arteta’s side.
