According to a report by The Chelsea Chronicles on Wednesday May 27, 2026, Enzo Maresca’s expected appointment as Manchester City manager has sparked fresh speculation that he could look to Chelsea for reinforcements, with Enzo Fernández emerging as a possible target this summer.
Fernández has been repeatedly linked with a move away since comments he made in March, when he admitted he would be open to joining Real Madrid. Manchester City have also been mentioned as potential suitors in recent reports.
The Argentine midfielder has enjoyed another strong individual season, contributing to 22 goals in 54 appearances from central midfield. He is also expected to play an important role for Argentina at the upcoming World Cup.
Despite his performances, Chelsea’s failure to qualify for European competition has fuelled rumours about a potential departure. However, those chances now appear to have significantly decreased in recent weeks.
Chelsea are believed to value Fernández at around £100 million, a fee that has already ruled out Real Madrid for now due to financial limitations. With a contract running until 2032, the club are under no pressure to sell him.
Although Manchester City were previously seen as serious contenders, reports now suggest they have shifted their attention towards Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson instead, easing concerns of an immediate approach for Fernández.
Even with Maresca’s arrival at City and his past connection with Fernández, the Premier League champions seem to have cooled their interest, reducing the likelihood of a transfer between the two clubs this summer.
Real Madrid could still revisit their interest if they make player sales to raise funds, but their priorities and squad needs remain uncertain at this stage, making any move far from guaranteed.
Other potential destinations such as Paris Saint-Germain and Atlético Madrid have been mentioned, but neither club appears to have an urgent need for a midfielder of his profile at present.
Saudi Arabian clubs could meet Chelsea’s valuation, but a move there is considered unlikely given Fernández’s age and ambition to remain at the top level of European football.
For now, Chelsea remain in a strong position to keep the Argentine, and under Xabi Alonso’s management, Fernández could still develop further into one of the world’s leading midfielders at Stamford Bridge.
