According to Daily Post Nigeria, the Nasarawa State Government has responded to criticism from former governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura over Governor Abdullahi Sule’s endorsement of Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada as his preferred governorship aspirant for the 2027 general elections.
The reaction comes after Al-Makura reportedly expressed reservations about the governor’s public support for Wadada, a development that has generated political discussions within the state’s ruling circles and among party stakeholders.
In a statement issued on behalf of the state government, Ali Abare, Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Governor, defended the governor’s position and described the criticism as unnecessary, insisting that the administration acted within its democratic rights and political discretion.
The statement read: “With due respect for Senator Al-Makura’s person and his place in the history of this state, we are duty-bound to set the record straight.”
According to the government, Governor Sule’s endorsement should not be misconstrued as an imposition but rather as a political opinion grounded in his assessment of leadership capacity and party dynamics ahead of the 2027 elections. It added that internal political discussions and alignments are normal in democratic systems and should not be viewed as divisive.
The statement further emphasized that the current administration remains focused on governance, development projects, and sustaining stability in Nasarawa State, rather than engaging in premature political rivalry. It urged political actors to exercise restraint in public commentary so as not to inflame tensions within the state’s political landscape.
Observers note that the exchange highlights emerging political positioning ahead of the next election cycle, with key figures within the state’s political structure beginning to signal preferences and alliances.
The government, however, maintained that Governor Sule’s priority remains the continued development of the state, and that any political decisions made are intended to strengthen the ruling party’s prospects while maintaining unity among stakeholders.
As reactions continue to trail the endorsement, political analysts say the coming months may further shape alliances and contestations within Nasarawa State’s political environment ahead of 2027.
