Commercial truck drivers on Tuesday reportedly blocked sections of the Oye-Ekiti expressway in Ekiti State to protest what they described as maltreatment and harassment during the recent governorship election in the state.
According to Punch Newspaper, the protest caused significant disruption to vehicular movement along the busy route, leaving many commuters stranded for several hours. Witnesses said numerous trucks were strategically positioned on parts of the road, making it difficult for motorists to pass through.
According to Punch, the protesting drivers alleged that they were subjected to unfair treatment by security personnel and election officials during the governorship election. Some of the drivers claimed that their vehicles were stopped for extended periods, while others alleged that they suffered losses as a result of restrictions imposed during the electoral process.
The newspaper reported that the protesters expressed frustration over what they considered a lack of consideration for their welfare and economic activities. Many of them argued that the restrictions affected the timely delivery of goods and resulted in financial losses.
According to Punch, the truck drivers demanded that relevant authorities address their grievances and ensure that similar incidents do not occur during future elections. They maintained that while they support efforts to ensure peaceful and credible elections, such measures should not unnecessarily affect law-abiding citizens carrying out legitimate business activities.
The protest attracted the attention of security agencies and local authorities, who reportedly moved to the area in an effort to restore normalcy and prevent the situation from escalating. According to Punch, discussions were initiated with representatives of the drivers to find a peaceful resolution to the dispute.
Commuters and business owners affected by the road blockade expressed concern over the disruption. Some travelers reported spending several hours on the road, while transport operators lamented the delays and additional costs caused by the protest.
According to Punch, residents of nearby communities also felt the impact of the blockade, as commercial activities were affected and movement within the area became difficult. Some motorists were forced to seek alternative routes, leading to congestion on adjoining roads.
Observers noted that road protests by transport workers often highlight broader concerns about policies and decisions that affect their livelihoods. They stressed the importance of dialogue between authorities and stakeholders to prevent disputes from escalating into actions that inconvenience the public.
According to Punch Newspaper, efforts were ongoing to persuade the protesters to reopen the road and allow traffic to resume. Authorities assured the drivers that their complaints would be examined and that appropriate measures would be taken where necessary.
The incident underscores the challenges that can arise during major political events and the need for authorities to balance security considerations with the economic interests of citizens. Many residents expressed hope that the matter would be resolved quickly through constructive engagement between the truck drivers and relevant government agencies.
