Public reactions have continued to trail comments made by AAC presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to extend the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, by six months.
Sowore expressed his dissatisfaction with the extension in a post shared on his official X account on June 20, 2026. The former presidential candidate argued that Adeniyi should have exited office earlier in line with established public service regulations and criticized the Federal Government’s decision to retain him beyond the expected retirement period.
According to Sowore, such tenure extensions could have negative consequences for public institutions. He maintained that allowing officials to remain in office beyond their statutory retirement dates undermines professionalism and affects morale within the civil service.
In his statement, Sowore said the policy hampers career progression for other qualified officers waiting for advancement and creates the impression that certain individuals receive preferential treatment due to political considerations. He further argued that adherence to established rules and procedures is essential for maintaining confidence and fairness within government institutions.
The comments quickly generated widespread discussion on social media, where Nigerians expressed differing opinions on the matter. While some users agreed with Sowore’s position, arguing that public service regulations should be strictly followed, others defended the government’s decision, citing Adeniyi’s performance and the need for continuity in the leadership of the Nigeria Customs Service.
