According to a report by the Punch on Sunday, June 21, 2026, Mr. Tunde Bakare, the father of 22-year-old tailor Abdulmalik, has narrated the events that led to the death of his son, who was allegedly shot dead by suspected cultists during a violent attack in Oreta, Ikorodu area of Lagos State.
Bakare explained that the crisis began earlier in the day following a disagreement involving a truck driver and some youths over money allegedly collected from a container brought into the area. The situation reportedly escalated after a young man lost his life in an accident involving the truck, creating tension within the community.
Recalling the events that unfolded later that day, the grieving father said: “I saw a crowd enter our area in Oreta. I was sitting outside my wife’s shop when I saw them.”
According to him, some members of the group openly threatened residents, warning that they would return to unleash violence on the community. However, he said he initially dismissed the threats and went about his daily activities.
He explained that his son was at home later in the evening and was asked to assist his mother at her shop. While he rested at home after returning from work, suspected cultists reportedly invaded the area at night, shooting indiscriminately and attacking residents.
The attackers allegedly killed several people, including Abdulmalik, who was helping his mother at the shop. Bakare said his wife narrowly escaped death after she was shot in the leg during the incident.
Describing his son, he said Abdulmalik was a peaceful and hardworking young man who had no connection to the individuals involved in the conflict. He noted that the 22-year-old was a tailor who was also preparing to continue his education after recently sitting for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.
