According to a report by BBC Sport on Sunday, June 21, 2026, Germany produced a dramatic comeback to defeat Ivory Coast 2-1 in their FIFA World Cup Group E clash, with substitute Deniz Undav scoring twice to seal qualification for the knockout stage.
Germany came into the match looking to continue their strong start to the tournament following an impressive victory in their opening game. However, Ivory Coast offered stern resistance and matched the four-time world champions for much of the encounter. Both sides created chances in an entertaining first half played at a fast pace.
Ivory Coast broke the deadlock in the 30th minute through Franck Kessié. The midfielder reacted quickly inside the penalty area to finish off a well-constructed move and hand the African side a deserved lead. Germany attempted to respond before the break but struggled to break down a disciplined Ivorian defence.
In the second half, Germany increased the pressure and enjoyed long spells of possession. Despite controlling much of the play, they found it difficult to create clear opportunities as Ivory Coast defended with determination and organisation. German manager Julian Nagelsmann eventually introduced Deniz Undav from the bench in an effort to change the game.
The substitution proved decisive in the 68th minute when Undav calmly finished to equalise shortly after entering the pitch. His goal restored confidence within the German side as they pushed for a winning goal late in the match.
Germany continued to attack with greater urgency while Ivory Coast remained a threat on the counterattack but gradually lost control of the game under relentless German pressure.
The decisive moment arrived deep into stoppage time when Felix Nmecha delivered an accurate pass to Undav, who composed himself before scoring the winning goal to complete Germany’s comeback. The dramatic late strike sparked huge celebrations among the players and supporters.
The result secures Germany’s place in the knockout rounds and strengthens their hold on top spot in Group E. Ivory Coast, meanwhile, must now focus on their final group-stage fixture as they aim to collect enough points to progress to the next phase of the tournament.
