According to a report by The Times Of Israel on May 4, 2026, the American military has stated that two US-flagged merchant vessels successfully transited through the Strait of Hormuz despite Iran’s reported blockade of the strategic waterway. The passage comes amid heightened maritime tensions in the region, where the strait remains a critical route for global oil and commercial shipping.
US Central Command confirmed ongoing naval activity in the area, saying: “US Navy guided-missile destroyers are currently operating in the Arabian Gulf after transiting the Strait of Hormuz in support of Project Freedom,” US Central Command says. CENTCOM says its forces “are actively assisting efforts to restore transit for commercial shipping.”
The command further reported early progress in its mission, stating: “As a first step, 2 US-flagged merchant vessels have successfully transited through the Strait of Hormuz and are safely headed on their journey,” CENTCOM adds. It described the operation as part of broader efforts to ensure maritime security and keep key shipping lanes open despite ongoing regional tensions.
CENTCOM also emphasized that its forces are working alongside international partners to support safe passage for commercial vessels in the Arabian Gulf. The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow but vital chokepoint, handles a significant share of global energy shipments, making stability in the area a key international concern.
While no further operational details were released, US officials maintained that naval deployments will continue as part of efforts to deter disruptions and restore normal shipping movement in the region.
