Minister of the Federal Capital Territory(FCT) and the National Leader of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Barr. Nyesom Wike, on Friday took a swipe at rival political groups, declaring that no party can claim opposition status without winning elections.
Wike, who spoke during a courtesy visit to the newly elected National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at its Wadata House headquarters in Abuja, insisted that credibility in opposition politics must be earned, not declared.
“You cannot become an opposition party without winning an election. Those claiming to lead the opposition have not won anything,” he said.
The former Rivers State governor used the visit to reaffirm his loyalty to the PDP leadership, pledging both moral and political support as the party prepares for future contests.
“I have come to reassure you of my support and loyalty. After elections, you need the backing of members, and I am here to give that support,” Wike stated.
He admitted that the PDP had passed through a turbulent phase but expressed optimism that the crisis was easing.
“Yes, we have had crisis, but we are coming out of it. It will take hard work and sacrifice to move the party forward,” he said.
Wike urged the new leadership to urgently reconcile aggrieved members and woo back defectors, noting that many who left the party were still interested in returning.
“Reach out to them. Many are still interested but have concerns. You know what to do,” he added.
He also warned the NWC not to lose focus due to ongoing legal battles, expressing confidence that the party would emerge victorious.
“We have defeated them at the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal. Don’t be distracted. Stay focused and work as a team,” Wike said.
Responding, PDP National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, assured that the new leadership would reposition the party and restore its strength ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“We will not disappoint Nigerians. We have capable hands and we are determined to take the party to a higher level,” he said.
Also speaking, National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, praised Wike for his continued support, describing his visit as a morale booster for the party.
The visit signals renewed efforts by the PDP to rebuild its base and reclaim its footing as a major opposition force in the country.
