Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has indicated a willingness to support any credible candidate that emerges through a legitimate party process, including former presidential candidate Peter Obi.
Amaechi made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television on Friday, April 17, 2026, where he discussed party primaries, internal democracy, and the importance of candidate selection in shaping electoral outcomes.
In his comments, Amaechi emphasized that his political position is guided by principles of competence and due process rather than personal rivalry or party sentiment.
He noted that if a candidate emerges through a transparent and competitive primary process, such a candidate deserves support from party stakeholders and political actors committed to democratic ideals. His statement was interpreted as an openness to collaboration across political lines, depending on how the selection process unfolds.
He specifically referenced Peter Obi, stating that Obi possesses the qualifications and capacity to govern Nigeria effectively if given the opportunity. Amaechi suggested that leadership ability should remain the central consideration in any political contest, rather than division or exclusion based on political affiliation.
“In his words,” he said, “Peter Obi is qualified to Govern this country, if he wins the primary, I will be at the forefront of those to campaign for him.”
