Barcelona president Joan Laporta has defended his record at the club, insisting he has restored the Blaugrana to their former glory, according to Sportskeeda. Speaking at the Ordinary General Assembly ahead of the upcoming 2026 presidential elections, Laporta highlighted both sporting and financial achievements under his leadership.
“We have returned Barca to where it deserved to be. You can take any indicator you want, and it’s clear that we’re much better off than we were four and a half years ago; it’s obvious. Anyone who doesn’t want to see it refers me to the saying that there is no one more blind than he who doesn’t want to see,” Laporta said. He added that the club had resisted groups that wanted to see Barcelona cornered, emphasizing the independence and resilience achieved during his tenure.
On the pitch, Barcelona completed a domestic treble last year, winning LaLiga, Copa del Rey, and the Supercopa de España. Off it, the club reported operating profits for the second consecutive season in 2024-25, recovering from years of financial struggle. Laporta credited these accomplishments as proof of the club’s resurgence under his leadership.
The president’s remarks were echoed in the context of player loyalty, notably from Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong. De Jong revealed that during the club’s financial difficulties, there was pressure to sell him due to his high wages. Despite interest from other European sides, he insisted on staying at Barcelona, recently signing a long-term contract that keeps him at the club until 2029.
Laporta’s comments come as he prepares to run for re-election, presenting a narrative of resilience, recovery, and restored glory. The combination of financial stability, on-field success, and player loyalty underlines his message that Barcelona is back on track, ready to compete at the highest levels both domestically and in Europe.
