Governor wike has strongly condemned what he described as an attempt by a former Chief of Defence Staff to use the military to intimidate civilians and seize land illegally.
Speaking during an inspection visit to the disputed area, the governor revealed that his office had earlier received reports of land grabbing and illegal occupation by unidentified individuals claiming military connections. He said he immediately instructed that all illegal activities be stopped until those involved could provide proper documentation or government approval.
According to the governor, soldiers were deployed at one point to chase the trespassers away, but the same group returned and attempted to take over the land again — this time, allegedly acting under the influence of a powerful retired military figure.
“I’m saying this, if the former Defence Chief didn’t abuse his power, this land grabbing scandal wouldn’t have happened,” the governor said angrily. “You cannot use the military to intimidate Nigerians. I’m not one of those who will bow to blackmail.”
He described the incident as unfortunate, noting that people in authority should use their positions to protect citizens, not to exploit them. The governor further vowed to pursue justice and ensure that the land remains under lawful control.
“Even if you once held a powerful office, that doesn’t put you above the law,” he added. “We will not tolerate any illegal possession of land in this state.”
The confrontation has stirred widespread reactions across the state, with residents praising the governor for his courage and firmness against intimidation.
