Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the Vice Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed support for the party’s newly introduced anti-defection policy aimed at strengthening party discipline among elected officials.
The development was disclosed by Theo Abu Agada, spokesperson of the NDC, in a post shared on his official X account on Thursday, June 18, 2026.
According to reports by TVC, the NDC recently adopted a compulsory indemnity agreement for all governorship and National Assembly aspirants preparing to contest under the party’s platform in the 2027 general elections. The policy stipulates that any elected officeholder who abandons the party for another political platform will automatically lose the seat secured through the NDC.
Reacting to the decision, Kwankwaso reportedly welcomed the initiative, describing it as a positive measure that promotes loyalty to the party and reinforces the principle of party supremacy as recognized by the Constitution.
In his statement on X, Theo Abu Agada wrote:
“Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has described the party’s newly introduced indemnity form against defection as a welcome development that reinforces constitutional provisions on party supremacy.”
The policy has generated discussion among political observers, with many viewing it as an effort by the NDC to discourage political defections and ensure greater commitment from candidates elected on the party’s platform.
