In a sharp critique of current U.S. foreign policy, journalist and System Update host Glenn Greenwald stated plainly that President Donald Trump is actively seeking an exit from the ongoing war, describing the conflict as a severe liability damaging the administration across political, economic, and domestic fronts.
Speaking as part of a high-profile panel discussion on the Piers Morgan Uncensored Show on Monday, June 8, 2026, Greenwald argued that the war has become a growing strain on the White House, with the approaching congressional midterm elections adding immense urgency to the president’s desire for a swift resolution.
“I think clearly President Trump wants to get out of the war. It has certainly been very bad for him in every respect, including politically,” Greenwald said during the broadcast. “The midterms are rapidly approaching.”
Greenwald highlighted that the domestic fallout from the military campaign is no longer just a matter of foreign policy debate, but a direct burden on everyday citizens.
He noted that the secondary economic effects of the conflict have radiated far beyond Washington, triggering volatility across the global economy and hitting American households directly through inflation and financial instability.
“This is a huge albatross around his neck, as are the secondary economic damage that has been done to the American economy, the global economy, the American people,” Greenwald emphasized.
Despite the president’s apparent desire to disengage and mitigate further damage, Greenwald argued that a swift conclusion to the conflict faces a massive roadblock: the pro-Israel lobby within the United States.
According to his analysis, powerful domestic interest groups remain heavily aligned against a U.S. withdrawal, creating a severe structural disconnect between Washington and its closest Middle Eastern ally.
This divergence between American and Israeli strategic interests represents the core structural crisis of the current campaign, Greenwald noted.
While the United States is increasingly preoccupied with the mounting economic and political costs of sustaining an open-ended military operation, Israel remains laser-focused on its long-term objective permanently dismantling any regional power capable of acting as a counterweight to its regional dominance.
